Australian Yachting Championship wraps up | Sandringham, Melbourne

Matt Allen and his Ichi Ban team, recent overall winners of the Rolex Sydney Hobart, continued their winning streak to take the Australian Yachting Championship on both IRC and ORCi at the Sandringham Yacht Club in Melbourne recently.

Geoff Boettcher’s South Australian boat, Secret Men’s Business, finished second on IRC with Tony Kirby’s Patrice third on IRC and second on ORCi, while South Australian Jason Ward’s Concubine was third in the ORCi division.

Local Hobson’s Bay Yacht Club competitors, Ikon, dominated Division 2 IRC and Tasmanian entrants Philosopher took the win in Division 3 IRC. The Philospher team, who are all younger than 25 aside from the owner, are all looking forward to defending their title on home waters in 2019.

I was on the start boat over the three days of racing, another fantastic opportunity to work with the Wilson twins, who are some of the best PRO’s in the business (see image below).

Ross and Kevin Wilson were the race officers for the event.

Many thanks to Australian Sailing and Sandringham Yacht Club for having me over the course of the event, and Pantaenius Sail & Motor Yacht Insurance for their support of my coverage.
