The Final Countdown: NUMBER 1
BY HARRY FISHER
FINALLY! We have made it to number one and the magazine’s launch party is tomorrow night at the Port Lincoln Yacht Club.
Thank you very much to everyone that has supported the magazine so far and followed the countdown online. Stay tuned to our Facebook page and website for purchasing information.
#1 – THE INAUGURAL MAGAZINE ARRIVES – 7 June 2016
Coming in at the top place in this countdown without a doubt has to be the moment the magazines arrived earlier this week.
This has been a project we have been dreaming about for a couple years and something that took a lot of hard work over the last few months to get it together.
The magazines arriving off the courier truck |
When the magazines arrived, I was jumping out of my skin! And now it’s your opportunity to get your hands on them!
We will be selling magazines at pop-up stores in Port Lincoln and Goolwa this weekend. Marc and I will be selling them at the Port Lincoln Yacht Club while Emma Short from Yachting South Australia will be selling them at the Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club.

The Final Countdown: NUMBER 2
BY HARRY FISHER
The second to last of the countdowns before our launch party this Saturday, very exciting times for Down Under Sail.
Magazines will be sold this weekend at the Port Lincoln and Goolwa Regatta yacht clubs at the respective Frostbite regattas.
#2 – SAM McCLOUD WINS MAIDEN TITLE – 7 January 2016
Coming in at number two is the moment we broke the news of Sam McCloud, Sam Flint and Mark Beaumont’s maiden sharpie national championship at the Sandy Bay Sailing Club in January.
Sam has overcome some extreme adversity throughout his sharpie career and to see the smile on his face, as well as those on the faces of his crew, was something very special.
The team, sailing their boat Warpig, is featured on the cover of the inaugural Down Under Sail magazine and you can read the full feature story by purchasing a magazine for $15.
Here’s the Facebook post from the day Sam clinched the title.
Stay tuned for all the upcoming purchasing information, which will include how to buy online as well as where all of our pop-up stores will be located.

The Final Countdown: NUMBER 3
BY HARRY FISHER
We’re closing in on Saturday’s launch party, which is set to be a cracking night at the Port Lincoln Yacht Club as part of the Frostbite Regatta.
Our online shop is nearly ready, so stay tuned to Down Under Sail for purchasing instructions very soon.
We will be selling magazines in Port Lincoln as well as at the Goolwa Frostbite Regatta this weekend through Emma Short from Yachting South Australia.
Cash only in Goolwa, cash and EFTPOS in Port Lincoln
#3 – AIKIN BOOM RIDE – 26 February 2014
Coming in at number three is the first video that ever went viral for Down Under Sail, which involved some classic antics on board Aikin at the 2014 Club Marine/Lexus Lincoln Week Regatta.
Following the traditional Megga’s BBQ event at Spalding Cove, I headed back to Port Lincoln on board Aikin, where one of their sailors, Mitch Mead, was told he had to ride on the boom in the middle of Boston Bay.
With just a spinnaker up, heading downwind at about 10 knots of boat speed, the main sheet was eased out and the boat heeled slightly and Mitch was dragged along in the water for a moment… What happened after that was priceless!
Check out the video below.
If you are in Port Lincoln over the long weekend and are keen to come along to the launch party, check out the Facebook event for all the details.

The Final Countdown: NUMBER 4
BY HARRY FISHER
BREAKING NEWS! The magazines arrived today, which is very exciting stuff.
We’ve already received a number of requests about the magazine and how to buy it, so to answer it all at once, we have an online shop under construction that will be launched in the next couple days. Please note online purchases will incur a shipping fee.
We will also soon release a list of events, regattas and various sailing days where we will be setting up pop up stores with both cash and EFTPOS purchases available (no PayPass/PayWave, pin only).
We love all the enthusiasm and hope you enjoy the magazine, now for NUMBER 4 in the countdown, wow we’re getting close to Saturday’s launch.
#4 – YSA PARTNERSHIP – Season 2015/16
Coming in at number four is one of the biggest milestones for Down Under Sail, partnering up with Yachting South Australia!
Becoming the official media partner with South Australia’s peak sailing body was a vehicle for a lot of further development for Down Under Sail and also kickstarted the business to allow us to pursue the idea of the DUS Magazine.
A photo from the third YSA Youth Tri Series event at Brighton and Seacliff Yacht Club |
We are also proud of what we were able to do for YSA, as the partnership gave us the opportunity to cover three major youth events in the state; the YSA Youth Tri Series, the SA Youth States and the SA Team Sailing States.
Each event brought greater coverage to South Australian sailing and I think we can all agree the live streaming of the finals series at the Team Sailing States in Ceduna was a great way for everyone to see the sailing.
As part of a continuation of our partnership, we are proud to announce we will be getting involved in the Team Sailing Nationals in Goolwa this July.
If you are in Port Lincoln over the long weekend and are keen to come along to the launch party, check out the Facebook event for all the details.

The Final Countdown: NUMBER 5
BY HARRY FISHER
We’ve made it to the TOP FIVE! Marc and I are extremely excited about this weekend and cannot wait to see everyone at the launch party in Port Lincoln. The magazines are currently in transit and we should get them on Wednesday.
If you are in Port Lincoln over the long weekend and are keen to come along to the launch party, check out the Facebook event for all the details.
#5 – DAN BUCHAN DESIGN – 19 May 2016
One of our greatest moments, which has rolled in at number five, was just this year, when we enlisted the help of Dan Buchan Design to help bring our vision of the inaugural Down Under Sail magazine to life.
We had been in talks with Dan, or Bubbles as he is more affectionately known from his history as a dish pig at the Grange Hotel, since late last year and in February this year he got started on his first concepts for the magazine.
Dan, who is now based in Sydney working as a graphic designer, was successful in being appointed as the new art director at TRACKS surfing magazine, so congratulations to him! We would like to think that having Down Under Sail in his portfolio gave him a leg up! (ha ha)
And we are also stoked to announce that Dan will be flying in to Port Lincoln this weekend to check out the sailing, have a few cold beers to celebrate and be there for the launch party… Make sure you introduce yourself to him.

15 to 1 – the best moments: NUMBER 6
BY HARRY FISHER
We’re getting even closer to our launch and our countdown is heating up. This hilarious edition is from the Lincoln Week Regatta in 2015
#6 – CONCUBINE WATER SKIING – February 2015
The sail back from the Megga’s BBQ event at the Club Marine/Lexus Lincoln Week Regatta is always an eventful one and in 2015 the sailors on Concubine took it to a whole new level.
Check out what they got up to in the video below.

15 to 1 – the best moments: NUMBER 7
BY HARRY FISHER
We’re in the last half of the countdown now and we’re in for a very memorable moment at number seven.
#7 – CARNAGE CORNER – 8 February 2016
Coming in at number seven is a great moment from the Wallaroo Sharpie States this year when a drone captured one of the craziest wing mark roundings we’ve ever seen. Three boats were involved in the carnage, which quite easily could have been a few more.

15 to 1 – the best moments: NUMBER 11
BY HARRY FISHER
Harry Fisher before the start of the 2015 Adelaide to Port Lincoln Yacht Race |
I was chatting with Western Australian Mike Giles, who was bringing his Sydney 47 Endorfin over with his crew to take part in the boat’s first Adelaide to Lincoln race. He was nice enough to let me jump on board and host a live blog during the race to give readers an insight in to what happens on the water.
The race had some challenges and we had some high-stakes boat bets in place with sister ship Fresh, which was a Sydney 47 from Port Lincoln. Local knowledge proved a big advantage with Fresh taking the chocolates, and the rums, come the end of the race.

15 to 1 – the best moments: NUMBER 12

We spoke with one of the bright young optimist sailors, Jonas Barrett, about how he was going in the event and what he had planned for the season… It’s safe to say Jonas was not shy in front of the camera.

15 to 1 – the best moments: NUMBER 13
BY HARRY FISHER
So far in the Down Under Sail countdown, we’ve had the first story published on our website and a great video update from Marc Ablett, but we’re in for something truly special with number 13.
We decided to count down the 15 best moments of Down Under Sail to recognise the iconic launch of our inaugural magazine on June 11 at the Port Lincoln Yacht Club.

15 to 1 – the best moments: NUMBER 14
BY HARRY FISHER
To recognise the iconic launch of our inaugural magazine, we are counting down the 15 best moments of Down Under Sail in the 15 days leading up to our launch on June 11 at the Port Lincoln Yacht Club.
The Port Lincoln Frostbite Regatta on the June long weekend will mark three years since the idea came to Marc and I, which was followed on by the launch of our website in January 2014 and many more great moments after that.
More information about how to buy our magazine will come to you during this countdown but what we can tell you is that we will be selling magazines online (including a postage fee) as well as at a number of pop-up shops at various regattas and events.
We started the countdown yesterday with the first ever story on our website – Peter Chappell winning the 2013/14 sharpie nationals.
#14 – NSW SPRINT SERIES – 25 March 2014
Keeping in the sharpie theme for now, we head across the country from where the last story was told for number 14 in the countdown. It’s over to the Georges River Sailing Club, where Marc Ablett did his first video update for Down Under Sail.
Marc’s video was about the NSW Sprint Series at Georges River, which aimed to pump up the next national championship to be held at that club later in the year… Check it out.
Keep your eyes peeled for more memorable moments throughout the next two weeks with #13 coming tomorrow!

#15 – THE FIRST ARTICLE – 15 January 2014
It was January 2014 and Marc and I were sailing a sharpie together at the national championships on the Swan River in Perth. We thought we’d come up with this great idea about starting a new sailing news website to bring stories about amateur regattas from around the country to the forefront.
WA788 – The Lizard |
After the nationals finished we started a blog, purchased the domain namedownundersail.com and started writing stories. The first story was about Western Australian sharpie veteran Peter Chappell, Peter Nicholas and Luke Payne sailing The Lizard to a national championship win.
Although this story was nothing ground breaking, we feel it deserved a place in the countdown as it was the official online beginning for Down Under Sail. To this day the story has been viewed 808 times online.
