The WA Sabre Fleet has just finished up their inaugural Opening Day Series. The series was held to promote Sabre sailing in WA and support Sabre yacht club opening day events.
30 Sabres entered the series which was held over 5 race days. Races were held at East Fremantle Yacht Club, Safety Bay Yacht Club, Royal Perth Yacht Club, Maylands Yacht Club and concluding with Perth Dinghy Sailing Club. Sabres were the largest dinghy fleet at all Opening Day events a sure sign to show Sabres are growing in WA.
Scott Olsen from Fremantle Sailing Club easily won the series however places for 2nd, 3rd & 4th were a tight finish with only 1 point between them. 2nd place was won by Ed Bannerman and 3rd was won by Pete Coop both sailors from East Fremantle Yacht Club with Tony Carr from Perth Dinghy Sailing Club coming a close 4th.
The Opening Day Series is set to become bigger next year with Mounts Bay Sailing Club beginning a Sabre fleet this year.
The next WA Sabre event is the Boating Hardware WA State Championships which kick off on the 6th November at Safety Bay Yacht Club. This year the National Championships will be held at Black Rock Yacht Club in Victoria and the following year the National Championships will return to WA and the Perth Dinghy Sailing Club, over 70 Sabres are expected to compete.
