Following the official close of entries for the upcoming Australian Laser Championships at the Adelaide Sailing Club passing yesterday on the first day of December, a record fleet of Lasers will hit the waters of the Gulf St Vincent to kick off the SA Summer of Sail Festival.
As the nomination deadline passed at 4.30pm, 205 entries had been received, surpassing the total entries from 2010 (196 entries) and 2003 (200 entries), the last two times the Laser Nationals were in Adelaide.
But the records do not stop there…
The 2017 Australian Laser Championships will also see the largest 4.7 fleet ever assembled for an Australian Championship with a total of 58 in the rig category.
With 58 Laser 4.7s now entered, it surpasses the previous record of 54 in 2014 at the McCrae Yacht Club in Victoria. This is a fantastic sign of the growth in the class which has been fostered on the back of back-to-back Olympic Gold Medals in the Men’s Laser Class with Tom Slingsby winning at London 2012 and Tom Burton winning more recently at Rio 2016. These medals are inspiring a new generation of sailors to emulate their feats.
Late entries are still being accepted up until 27 December so if you have not entered the event yet, click HERE to register.
