The Adelaide-based Westminster School has become the first Australian school sailing team to win an Interdominion title on New Zealand waters following a thrilling finish at the Sandspit Yacht Club on Algies Bay today.
It was a thrilling finish with Westminster and Hobart’s The Friends School fighting it out in the last race to decide the overall winner.
Westminster coach and parent Sandy Higgins said in a Facebook post that the finish was “very nerve racking” as the race came right down to the final moments at the finish line.
The win caps off a great year for the Westminster team, which in July took out its first national championship in a talented display at the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron.
It also shows a lot of promise for Australian team sailing with Australia finishing first and second at the Interdominions, another feat that has never been done before on New Zealand waters.
